The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has sacked the head coach of the senior national team, Chris Houghton after the terrible performance of the team at the ongoing AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast.
The Executive Committee of GFA further dissolved the technical team of the Black Stars.
According to a statement from the FA which was released around 23:00 GMT on Tuesday, January 23, 2023, the FA will provide a roadmap on the future of thr Black stars in the coming days.
“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect,” the FA stated in a late night press release.
“The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars. The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars,” the statement added.
Having assumed the position in early last year with the mission to rejuvenate the team following a lackluster World Cup campaign in Qatar, Chris Hughton failed woefully in guiding Ghana beyond the first round in the AFCON.
Under Chris Hughton’s management, the Black Stars encountered a series of setbacks, including a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde, a draw with Egypt, and a peculiar turn of events in their crucial match against Mozambique in which they relinquished a two-goal lead in the dying moments of added time.
The team was able to secure only 2 points after playing all their matches at the group stages of the ongoing AFCON 2023 and as a result came third in their group.
