The Black Stars‘ journey in the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire appears to have reached its conclusion as they failed to secure a victory in their final Group B match.
Ghana squandered a two-goal advantage, settling for a 2-2 draw against Mozambique, accumulating a total of two points from three matches.
This follows their 1-2 defeat to Cape Verde and a previous 2-2 draw with Egypt. Fans are attributing the team’s inability to clinch a win to the perplexing halftime substitution made by Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton, who replaced Joseph Paintsil with Andre Dede Ayew.
Joseph Paintsil had established himself as Ghana’s most potent attacking force, contributing to the team’s success with the first of two penalty kicks converted by Jordan Ayew. Despite his impactful performance, Hughton justified the substitution by citing Paintsil’s apparent fatigue.
In the aftermath of the disappointing draw, Joseph Paintsil vehemently contested Hughton’s claim of fatigue when confronted by a journalist in the mixed zone. He retorted sharply, saying, “What fatigue?”
As it stands, the Black Stars find themselves in the third position in Group B with two points. Their qualification hinges on the outcomes of other matches, as they await to determine their fate as one of the four best third-placed teams.
