A 27-year-old woman named Abdulai Zalia has been handed a two-year prison sentence by the Walewale District Court for the abduction of a one-year-old child in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.
The incident occurred in Walewale while the child’s mother was asleep.
Upon returning home late from a football match, the child’s father discovered the absence of the baby beside his sleeping wife and promptly reported the situation to the authorities.
The traumatized parents swiftly notified the police of the missing child.
In a quick response, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service located the 13-month-old baby and apprehended the suspected abductor, Abdulai Zalia, on the same day as the incident.
The arrest took place on April 18, 2024, during a search for the missing infant conducted by the police.
Zalia was charged with theft and brought before the court where she pleaded guilty and was subsequently convicted.
During her confession in court, she admitted to stealing the child with the help of her friend, Rahi, while the mother was asleep.
The sentencing was carried out by the court under the direction of His Worship Simon Kofi Bediako after Zalia pleaded guilty to the charges.
Meanwhile, there are reports from some residents suggesting that Zalia has a history of mental health issues and previous involvement in theft cases.
