Civil society organization Citizen Eye Ghana (CITEG) has expressed deep concern about what it describes as the selective nature of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) newly launched Unity Agenda, stressing that such an approach could exacerbate existing divisions in the party rather than foster healing.
In a press release dated April 4, 2025, as sighted by this portal, the founder and president of CITEG, Alex Kwaku Tetteh, said a recent closed-door meeting at the Rock City Hotel in Kwahu by the party undermines the objective of bringing the party together citing the exclusivity of the event as a contributing factor.
“With unity as the sole focus, such future events should be inclusive of all party stakeholders. Selective recognition can deepen divisions rather than heal them.” ” Tetteh said.
The organization also praised former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s comments at the gathering, particularly his candid acknowledgment of underutilizing presidential powers.
Akufo-Addo also reminded party members that political leadership within the NPP should be earned, not inherited, pointing out that both he and former President John Agyekum Kufuor did not serve as vice presidents before becoming the party’s flag bearers and later, presidents.
As the NPP prepares for its upcoming flagbearer contest, Citizen Eye Ghana highlighted key contenders, including former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, and Boakye Agyarko.
The group urged the party leadership to ensure a fair and level playing field for all aspirants.
“There is currently no ban on campaigning; therefore, those who claim Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong has flouted party rules and is spreading falsehoods,” the group added..
CITEG also referenced a recent poll by Global InfoAnalytics, which revealed that 68% of respondents held former President Akufo-Addo responsible for the NPP’s electoral defeat.
The poll also showed that 40% blamed Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, and 37% blamed Vice President Bawumia. Notably, only 9% attributed the blame to Kennedy Agyapong, despite his support for Bawumia’s 2024 campaign.
CITEG concluded by urging the NPP to rebuild public trust through transparent, inclusive, and accountable leadership practices as the country approaches another critical electoral season.
