The Dean of the University of Cape Coast Business School, Professor John Gatsi, has strongly criticized the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, for referring to the participants in the #OccupyBoG protest as “hooligans.”

In his rebuke, Professor Gatsi deemed the language used by Dr. Addison as vulgar and called for its condemnation, stating that such discourse is uncivilized and regrettable, according to a report by 3news.com.

“I think it is unfortunate, the language is vulgar and is unexpected of a Governor of the central bank,” Prof. Gatsi remarked.

Furthermore, Prof. Gatsi emphasized that the appropriate response from the central bank governor should involve providing answers to Ghanaians concerning the current economic situation and the alleged mismanagement at the Bank, rather than resorting to derogatory terms against the protesters.

“I think the central bank Governor has a duty to continue to press on Ghanaians to understand his position but to go beyond that and call protesters hooligans and the rest that they should know the right channel to use, etc., that is uncalled for, that is unfortunate, and I believe the central bank Governor is exercising powers that he thinks he wields over the people,” he added.

Dr. Ernest Addison had previously characterized the #OccupyBoGProtest, led by the Minority Members of Parliament in Ghana on October 3, 2023, as “completely unnecessary.” He asserted that the minority could have pursued more civilized means to address their grievances, rather than resorting to street demonstrations, which he referred to as actions taken by “hooligans.”

In a related development, Ghana’s premier digital news platform, GhanaWeb, in partnership with the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, has initiated an aggressive campaign aimed at encouraging the Ghanaian Parliament to pass comprehensive legislation governing organ harvesting, organ donation, and organ transplantation within the country.
