In a recent development, Daniel Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has offered explanations for his decision to clandestinely record a conversation regarding the alleged plot to remove Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akufo-Dampare, from his position.
Mr. Naabu, a central figure in the controversial leaked audio recording, justified his actions by asserting that his intention was to present the recording to President Akufo-Addo, enabling him to make an informed judgment on the matter.
Opening up about his motivations on Monday, August 28, during his appearance before the Committee tasked with investigating the issue, Naabu revealed that his primary objective was to provide the President with unfiltered evidence, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of the situation.
He further explained that while he typically doesn’t record his conversations with others, the gravity of the situation and its potential implications led him to deviate from this norm. Naabu emphasized that his aim was to maintain transparency and honesty in his communication with the President, thus safeguarding their relationship from any misunderstandings or distrust.
“The reason for recording this tape is that they are coming to tell me to go and tell the President something that they know what they are saying, and it is either I don’t go to tell the President and then I and my party suffer for it and if I also go to talk to the President, it is good to tell him the right thing and since I cannot keep everything they were telling me at that point, it was very good to record, and I know the President I go and tell him something, and it turns not to be true, next time he won’t give me respect,” he stated.
“I didn’t do it myself, but I called someone to come and do it for me,” he added.
The ongoing probe seeks to unravel the circumstances surrounding the leaked tape and the allegations against key individuals involved. Naabu’s candid revelations shed light on his perspective and underscore the complexity of relationships within political landscapes.
