Nandaya Yaw Stanley, the Member of Parliament-elect for Wulensi, has clarified that his decision to contest as an independent candidate does not equate to abandoning his allegiance to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Speaking on Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, December 23, Stanley addressed concerns about his political alignment following his victory in the constituency.
Stanley explained that his independent candidature was a direct response to the will of the people in Wulensi, who called on him to contest despite challenges during the party’s primaries.
“Going independent didn’t mean I forfeited the party or anything, no. It was the choice of the people. They voted me in primaries, and that was an argument between me and the incumbent. The people called me back to contest,” he said.
He further explained that he felt compelled to heed the voices of his constituents. “I had no other choice but to listen to the voice of the people, and that’s exactly what I did—and they really voted for me,” Stanley added.
When asked about his future political alignment in Parliament, Stanley remained noncommittal, noting that his constituents would play a pivotal role in determining which side he aligns with. “The decision will ultimately come from the people I represent,” he remarked, leaving open the possibility of working with either the NDC or the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the ninth parliament.
Stanley’s clarification highlights the nuanced nature of his independent campaign, rooted in grassroots support and a strong connection to his constituents. His approach reflects a balancing act between loyalty to the NDC and responsiveness to the people of Wulensi, who placed their trust in him as their representative.
