The National Executive Committee of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has unanimously confirmed Dr. Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Walewale constituency.
The decision was made at a meeting held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, following the withdrawal of the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Lariba Zuweira Abudu, from the parliamentary race.
A statement issued and signed by NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua which was sighted by InsiderGH.com, expressed the party’s appreciation for the incumbent MP’s decision to step aside.
“The National Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party, at its meeting held on Wednesday 11 September 2024 unanimously confirmed Dr Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama as the party’s Parliamentary Candidate for the Walewale constituency,” the statement stated
Lariba Zuweira Abudu, who has served as the MP for Walewale, chose to withdraw from the primary contest, leaving Dr. Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama as the sole candidate.
The party lauded her move, which it said demonstrates her commitment to party unity and its long-term objectives. “The decision was arrived at, following the withdrawal of Lariba Zuweira Abudu, incumbent Member of Parliament and one of the two aspirants, from the parliamentary primary contest. This resulted in Dr Tia Abdul-Kabiru becoming the sole aspirant for the contest,” the statement continued.
The NPP’s confirmation of Dr. Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama as the parliamentary candidate is seen as a major step toward retaining the Walewale seat in the 2024 general elections. Dr. Mahama, a respected figure in the constituency, is expected to rally strong support from the party’s base as well as the wider electorate.
The NPP praised Lariba Zuweira Abudu for her service to the party and the Walewale constituency, with many party members viewing her decision as an act of statesmanship aimed at fostering unity within the party ahead of the crucial elections.
