In his address at the Minority caucus meeting in Ho, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), firmly opposed the proposed change in the date for the 2024 elections from December to November.
Mr. Mahama emphasized that the NDC does not view this proposal as sincere, alleging that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is attempting to manipulate the electoral process to their advantage.
He cited the Electoral Commission’s sudden interest in shifting the election date, despite not demonstrating readiness during the District Assembly elections held the previous December.
Expressing confidence in the NDC’s prospects in the upcoming elections, Mr. Mahama asserted that the people of Ghana are poised to reject the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government due to its poor governance characterized by corruption, maladministration, nepotism, and incompetence.
He also addressed the issue of continuous voter registration, insisting that the process must allow for real-time monitoring by all political parties and stakeholders to prevent fraud and exploitation.
Commending the Minority in Parliament for their efforts in holding the government accountable, Mr. Mahama reminded caucus members of their crucial role in safeguarding against poor governance and excessive executive power.
Reflecting on the composition of the current Parliament, Mr. Mahama highlighted the significance of an assertive legislative arm independent of the executive, echoing the desires of Ghanaians for greater scrutiny and oversight.
Mr. Mahama outlined policy initiatives aimed at improving living conditions and revitalizing the economy, including the 24-hour economy policy. He cautioned against the exclusive use of the Ghana Card for identification purposes and urged its integration into daily life before implementation.
Addressing concerns about disenfranchisement, Mr. Mahama warned against the politicization of the Ghana Card and emphasized the need for sufficient time for its integration into society.
Finally, Mr. Mahama criticized the performance of the current government, asserting that the NPP has led Ghana into a period of deep suffering. He accused the government of attempting to distance itself from its own failures for electoral gain.
