Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to invigorate AngloGold Ashanti, with a sharp focus on creating job opportunities for residents of Obuasi and surrounding communities to bolster the local economy.
This commitment was articulated during a dialogue with traditional leaders in Adansi, as part of his extensive stakeholder engagement tour across the Ashanti region.
Moreover, Mr. Mahama promised to reanimate a deserted industrial hub, underlining its inception as a response to job layoffs during a suspension of activities at the gold mine.
He also refuted allegations of impeding AngloGold Ashanti’s operations during his administration, emphasizing his backing for initiatives like the Obuasi Deep Decline, aimed at enhancing operations at the gold mine.
The former president also emphasized his contribution to establishing the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Obuasi campus, during his tenure, pledging comprehensive measures to propel regional development.
“In regions with mineral extraction, development often follows suit. South Africa, for instance, has witnessed positive transformations due to mining. We aspire to harness the benefits of mining in Adansi and neighboring communities for their advancement,” he remarked.
Addressing concerns about electoral violence and casualties during the 2020 elections, the NDC flagbearer expressed remorse and reassured traditional leaders of the NDC’s commitment to fostering peace in the upcoming 2024 elections.
“We, as the NDC, are proponents of peace, and we fervently hope and pledge that there will be no violence or fatalities in the 2024 elections. It is regrettable that lives were lost in the 2020 general elections. We pledge as a party to adhere to the regulations governing the elections to ensure a peaceful process in 2024. I also implore traditional authorities to engage with other political parties for a harmonious election,” affirmed the NDC flagbearer.
