In Ghanaian folklore, the saying “every day is for the thief, one day is for the owner” is a poignant reminder of the inevitability of justice and accountability.

This adage resonates deeply in the context of the current political landscape in Ghana, where the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has been in power since 2017. As the 2024 general elections approach, this phrase takes on a renewed significance, symbolizing the impending judgment day for the government and a potential turning point for the Ghanaian people.

Since coming into power, the NPP government has engaged in unprecedented acts of corruption, economic mismanagement, and unfulfilled promises. For many Ghanaians, these years have been akin to the proverbial “every day” of the thief.

One of the most significant grievances against the current administration has been the state of the economy. Despite promises of transformation and development, many citizens feel the economic reality has been harsh.

The cost of living has soared, and inflation has eroded the purchasing power of the average Ghanaian. Unemployment remains a critical issue, particularly among the youth, leading to growing disillusionment and frustration.
Moreover, the specter of corruption has loomed large over the government.

High-profile scandals, such as the PDS scandal and the Agyapa Royalties deal, have fueled perceptions of a lack of transparency and accountability. These controversies have not only eroded public trust but have also reinforced the image of the government as the proverbial “thief,” enjoying the benefits of power while ordinary citizens bear the brunt of their actions.

However, as the adage suggests, “one day is for the owner.” For Ghanaian citizens, December 7th, 2024, represents that crucial day. It is a day of reckoning, a day when the power to shape the nation’s future returns to the hands of the people.

On this day, Ghanaians will have the opportunity to evaluate the NPP government’s performance critically and decide whether they deserve another term in office. The essence of democracy lies in the power of the vote. It is the ultimate check on those who hold public office, ensuring that they remain accountable to the people they serve.

The upcoming election is not just a political event; it is a reaffirmation of the democratic principles that underpin the Ghanaian state. It is a reminder that no matter how long a government remains in power, it is ultimately answerable to the electorate. As the election approaches, it is imperative for Ghanaians to reflect on the past years and consider the future they envision for their country.

The power lies in their hands to demand better governance, greater accountability, and a more equitable society.

December 7th, 2024, is the day for the “owners”(Ghanaians) to reclaim their rightful place, to ensure that their voices are heard, and to chart a new course for the country.

In conclusion, the saying “every day is for the thief, one day is for the owner” encapsulates the enduring hope for justice and accountability.

The Nana Addo – Bawumia led NPP government may have had its “every day,” but come December 7th, 2024, the Ghanaian citizens—the true owners—will have their day. It is a day that holds the promise of change and the potential for a brighter future, driven by the collective will of the people.
