A spokesperson for the New Force political movement, Shalimar Abbiusi, finds herself in legal turmoil once again as she has been re-arrested following the withdrawal of charges related to obtaining a student permit with false declarations against her.
Last week, the Belgian National faced charges for allegedly using false documents claiming to be a student at the Ghana Christian University College in order to secure a residence permit. Despite being granted bail amounting to GHc 20,000, the case was slated to proceed to full trial on Tuesday.
However, surprising developments unfolded in court when prosecutors from the immigration service, led by ACI Adolf Aboagye Asenso, announced their intention to withdraw the case. Consequently, the accused was discharged, and the case was officially struck out.
In an unexpected turn of events, moments after leaving the courtroom, Shalimar Abbiusi was apprehended by an immigration van. Citi News sources within the prosecution indicated that she was re-arrested, despite the earlier decision to withdraw the case.
Expressing outrage, Abbiusi’s legal team, headed by Francis Xavier Sosu, accused the immigration service of orchestrating a plot to deport their client. Sosu vehemently criticized the actions of the immigration officers, questioning the need to detain Abbiusi after the charges were dropped.
“You came to the court and said that you have asked that the charges against the person be dropped. The charges are dropped and the person is discharged. Then you bundle the person as if she is a common criminal here. If you want the person in your office, from here we will come to your office,” Sosu declared. He went on to express disappointment in the perceived disregard for democratic principles and international norms, stating, “Why do you behave this way? That is a complete assault, It is completely uncalled for. Where we are going, I think we are sending the wrong signal to the international community. After all, there are Ghanaians who are also in other countries.”
