The chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education, Ms. Kathleen Addy, has said all coup d’états that have ever happened in Ghana’s historical times were met with the hope of improving citizens’ welfare but ended in disappointment.
“Surprisingly all coups in Ghana’s history were met with jubilations by citizens with the high hopes of improving their welfare but none were able to meet expectations” She added.
Ms Addy made this comment when she interacted with officers of Ghana Immigration Service in Dambai in the Oti Region, on Thursday, February 15, 2024 during a working visit to the region.
She explained further that using violence to change governments is never an option because hindsight has proven that they always end in disappointment. The chairperson went on to admit that some frustrations of citizens may sometimes lead them to believe in the false hope that a violent overthrow and rule with force might be a better option but was quick to point out that the over a decade of forceful rule in Ghana’s history doesn’t support that claim.
The chairperson also called on the Ghana Immigration Service to continue supporting the NCCE, as has always been the case. She commended the Service for the wonderful collaboration on the Prevention Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE) project.
Ms Addy went on to say that the Commission does not take lightly Ghana Immigration Service huge role in preventing extremists from entering the borders of Ghana. She urged them to collaborate effectively with citizens, especially in the border towns, to make their work more easier.
The Deputy Oti Regional Commander, ACI Oduro of the Ghana Immigration Service on his part, thank the chairperson for recognizing the role of Ghana Immigration Service on the PCVE project. He went on to promise that the Service would continue to support NCCE on any other project as far as their mandate permits.
The NCCE, with funding from the European Union, is implementing the Prevention Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE) project in all Northern Regions of Ghana and the three adjoining Regions. The project aims to create awareness on Violent Extremism and offer a platform for citizens and appropriate agencies to collaborate and prevent extremists and their activities from entering Ghana.
