The All People’s Congress (APC) and the Movement for Change have intensified calls for the resignation of Jean Mensa, Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), citing alleged inefficiencies in managing the 2024 general elections. The groups argue that urgent reforms are necessary to restore public confidence in the nation’s electoral process.
Hassan Ayariga, the APC’s Presidential Candidate, criticised the EC for delays in tallying and announcing election results, labeling the situation a “democratic setback.” Speaking on Channel One TV, Ayariga expressed frustration over what he described as outdated processes. “Two days after the election, some constituencies and regions were still counting votes. This inefficiency is unacceptable. With a digital voting system, we would have had the results by now,” he stated, questioning the competence of the electoral body.
The Movement for Change echoed these concerns. Courage Nobi, the group’s Deputy Director for Policy, accused the EC of mishandling critical aspects of the electoral process. He called for the entire leadership of the Commission to step down after declaring the results to pave the way for institutional reform. “The EC’s actions have not inspired confidence. If the commissioners truly value Ghana’s democracy, they should resign to allow for a complete overhaul of the system,” Nobi asserted.
Despite the criticism, the EC received some praise for its overall execution of the elections. Joyce Larbi, Deputy Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), commended the Commission for overseeing what she described as a largely peaceful and well-organised election. “While there were some challenges, the EC deserves credit for maintaining order throughout the process,” Larbi noted.
