The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ho, Hon. Divine R.K. Bosson, has been summoned to appear before the Public Relations and Complaints Committee (PRCC) of the Ho Municipal Assembly following accusations of making defamatory statements against Assembly Members.
The call for this action was made by Hon. Raphael Dogbe, the Assembly Member for Klefe Electoral Area, who urged the Presiding Member, Hon. Mawunyo Agbe, to invoke Section 217(2) of the Local Government Act (Act 936).
Hon. Dogbe’s request follows allegations that the MCE referred to the Assembly Members as “thieves” in connection to the handling of streetlights meant for installation in various electoral areas.
According to reports, Hon. Bosson suggested that the streetlights were being sold by the Assembly Members instead of being used for their intended purpose. An audio recording of the MCE’s alleged remarks has surfaced, intensifying the controversy.
The Local Government Act 217(2) mandates that when a defamatory statement is made by a member of the District Assembly, the Presiding Member must refer the matter to the PRCC for inquiry. In line with this, the case has been referred to the PRCC, which is expected to conduct a thorough investigation and report its findings within 14 days.
The allegations have caused significant damage to the reputation of the Assembly Members in their respective electoral areas, as the remarks came from a high-ranking official. The situation has sparked outrage among the members, who are now seeking a resolution.
Should the PRCC’s findings confirm the defamatory nature of the statements, the Assembly Members may consider passing a Vote of No Confidence in the MCE, as provided by Section 20(4) of the Local Government Act.
In a statement, the Ho Municipal Assembly assured the public that the matter is being handled with the necessary diligence and that further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds. The PRCC’s inquiry is seen as a critical step toward ensuring accountability and maintaining the integrity of public office holders within the Assembly.
