Bawumia's Visit to Volta Region Time-wasting and Unproductive; Marks His Ceremonial Farewell To The Region — Volta NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has criticized Vice President Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia’s visit to the region, labeling it as a “time-wasting” and “unproductive” endeavor.

According to a statement signed by Hon. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Secretary of the NDC, Vice President Bawumia’s visit marks his farewell to the people of the Volta Region as he prepares to exit the political stage.

The NDC expressed no surprise over Bawumia’s defeat in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership contest to Kennedy Agyapong, attributing it to the Voltarians’ preference for honest, truthful, and trustworthy leaders, irrespective of their political affiliations.

The statement emphasized the stark contrast between Bawumia’s rejection by NPP members and the overwhelming support former President John Dramani Mahama received from Voltarians during the NDC presidential primaries. This, according to the NDC, highlights the true leadership preferences of the people in the region.

The NDC regards Bawumia’s visit not just as a ceremonial farewell but as a critical moment for the Volta people to voice their demands and hold the government accountable. The NDC’s statement outlined several key issues that they believe need addressing:

  1. Accountability and Marginalization: The NDC urged Voltarians to reflect on the alleged unfulfilled promises, marginalization, and neglect of the region by the Nana Addo-Bawumia-led NPP government.
  2. Financial Obligations: The statement called for the payment of the $126 million cedi equivalent owed to Volta Region constituencies under the “one million dollar-cedi equivalent a year per constituency” promise, which has reportedly been unfulfilled for the past seven years.
  3. Educational Promises: The NDC also highlighted Bawumia’s unfulfilled promise to the Chief Imam to build model schools in all Zongo communities, including those in the Volta Region.

The statement concluded with a call for an end to what the NDC described as an era of empty promises. It emphasized that Voltarians deserve a leader who is experienced, honest, credible, and trustworthy, suggesting that Bawumia does not meet these criteria.

Vice President Bawumia began his tour of the Volta Region, this morning, with engagements with the Clergy, Imams and Zongo Chiefs.
