Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed his disappointment over the Chief Justice’s determination to haul Dr. Dominic Ayine before the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council (GLC).
Weeks ago, InsiderGH.com filed a report on the fact that the Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, has dragged Former Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine to the Disciplinary Committee of the GLC for his disparaging comments on the 2020 Election Petition.
In an Interview with Adom TV, General Mosquito as he is popularly called, reminded the Chief Justice that the respectand confidence of legal practitioners must be earned and not forced.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia expressed how unhappy he is with the Chief Justice’s decision and went ahead to indicate that his actions are enough proof of the fact that the Chief Justice is doing everything humanly possible to gag lawyers from commenting on critical issues.
According to him, the National Democratic Congress will do everything possible to prevent the Chief Justice from gagging or frustrating its members.
He went further to state that he has realized that the Chief Justice is trying to scare Dr. Ayine from commenting on critical issues but he want to tell him [the Chief Justice] that “gou may want to scare a Zongo boy but not with long beard.”
In a statement released by the NDC General Secretary on June 21, which is available to InsiderGH.com, he stressed that “wish to state that, even as the action taken against Dr Ayine is unjustified, it is but a symptom of a larger problem. It is no coincidence that virtually all the lawyers who have been reported to the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council by the Chief Justice, Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, in recent times are aligned to the NDC.”
“What is the Chief Justice’s personal interest in the punishment of NDC affiliated lawyers that he is so keen to initiate unwarranted actions against them? We dare say that such treatment would not be meted out to lawyers who are aligned to the NPP for reasons best known to the Chief Justice. “
Dr. Dominic Ayine was reported to the GLC by the Supreme Court for allegedly berating the judiciary’s conduct during the 2020 election petition in a panel session.
Dr. Ayine was accused of stating that “the Supreme Court’s failure to apply the rules of procedures as well as the consistent and continuous dismissal of the petitioners’ applications or reliefs were the basis of his assertion”.
He made these comments during a panel discussion on “Presidential Election Petitions and their Impact on Africa’s Democracy”.
The Supreme Court in its petition reminded the Disciplinary Committee of a similar case where the Bolgatanga East legislator made ‘scandalous’ statements of the court, during the 2020 presidential election petition where “Dr. Ayine apologized for profusely, which were unbecoming of a lawyer of his standing and a former Deputy Attorney-General.”
In view of this, “His Lordship the Chief Justice, therefore, finds his alleged disparaging comments totally unacceptable and would like you to investigate this matter further”, it concluded.
