The host of Joy FM’s news analysis show, Newsfile, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has skewered President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the political class for breaching COVID-19 protocols during the funeral rites of the late New Patriotic Party Former General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, also known as Sir John.
According to Mr. Anyenini, there is a great danger for the Ghanaian society if leaders make rules and then break them recklessly without fear.
During a monologue on a segment of his show dubbed “Samson’s Take,” he noted that parliament during the onset of COVID-19 passed the Imposition of Restriction law to give the President powers to impose restrictions based on the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
“This was because COVID-19 is a public health crisis for which government must protect lives,” he said.
He further noted that based on the law passed by parliament, the president banned rallies and other gatherings.
However, the president and the political class went ahead to break the laws to campaign for votes in the run-up to the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections and other programmes that took place after the election.
For him, it appears the COVID-19 laws were only to punish poor and vulnerable citizens. He also cited the recent arrest of some members of the Christ Embassy Church for breaching COVID-19 protocols.
According to Samson, the COVID-19 laws prevent the release of bodies killed by COVID-19 to families for burial. He noted that such corpses must be buried without ceremonies.
“Mr. President, you just breach that law again with all who matter in your government,” he said, citing the president’s attendance of the funeral of Sir John.
He went further to stress that the president himself even placed his life at risk by filing past the corpse of Sir John.
His comments followed the massive disregard for Covid-19 protocols during the funeral of Former Forestry Commission boss, Sir John at Sakora Wonoo, in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region.
