Attorney General and Minister of Justice Godfred Dame, has indicated that the practice of law in Ghana is a privilege, and not a right.
Mr Dame made this statement while addressing a gathering at the swearing-in ceremony of the new executives of the Ghana Bar Association in Accra.
According to him, the practice of the law comes with the moral obligation and legal duty to uphold the profession’s dignity and ensure that the privilege of being called to the bar is not abused through unethical and unethical conducts.
He reminded the GBA’s new President that he is taking office at a time when the issue of ethics and standards at the bar has taken on “imminent relevance,” with the standard of practice at an all-time low.
“I must also state that the judiciary should also assert its might by acting against such persons with a firm fist in the situations where lawyers misconduct themselves in court but judges fail to apply the relevant sanctions, contributing in equal measure to the destruction of the integrity of the judiciary,” he stated.
