The National Democratic Congress has responded to the allegations of dual-citizenship leveled against MP-elect for Assin North Constituency in the Central Region of Ghana.

This comes after Ghanaians, especially supporters of the New Patriotic Party, took to social media to widely circulate posts that suggest that the NDC MPs-elect for Assin North, Hon. James Gyakye Quayson, holds a Canadian citizenship in addition to his Ghanaian citizenship.

In a letter issued on 23rd December 2020 at the party’s Secretariat in Accra, the NDC stated categorically that the MP-elect is a full citizen of Ghana and owes no allegiance to any other state. “He is a Ghanaian in law and in fact qualifies to be a Member of Parliament according to the laws of Ghana,” they stated.

According to the statement signed by the Director of Communications, Kakra Essamuah, Hon. James Gyakye Quayson stayed in Canada for a while in the past but has successfully renounced his Canadian citizenship on 19th December 2020, and was issued a Renunciation Certificate by Canadian authorities.

The issue came up prior to the 2020 election when a group known as the Concerned Citizens of Assin-North Constituency raised it. They petitioned the Electoral Commission on the citizenship of the Hon. James Gyakye Quayson. The EC accordingly invited Mr. Quayson to make himself available on 24th to 27th November, 2020. The EC cleared him to go ahead and contest after all necessary documentations proved him to be a Ghanaian who was eligible to stand to be voted for.

“The National Democratic Congress hereby calls on the general public and in particular, the good people of Assin North Constituency, to disregard this false information promoted by the NPP and circulating on social media. Remain assured that Hon. James Gyakye Quayson will be sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency on 7th January, 2021 to serve his full term as MP,” the statement holds.

In a related development, another MP-elect in the just ended elections has also come under serious accusations of dual citizenship days after Hon. Quayson’s own reemerged. The accused person is the MP-elect for Nsuta Kwamang Beposo, Hon Adelaide Ntim. She is said to have American citizenship in addition to her Ghanaian citizenship.
