Personnel of the Upper West Regional Police Emergency Patrol Team had engaged in a shootout with two robbers on the Tamale-Bolga Highway around 13:30 on Saturday, June 26, 2021.
This comes after Police in the region picked up intelligence that two suspected armed robbers, with knives and guns were trying to snatch a motorbike from its owner on the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Highway.
The police quickly moved to the scene to deal with the suspected robbers.
Upon getting close to the scene, one of the robbers was seen with a locally manufactured pistol, and the other one holding a knife.
Upon seeing the police, the two suspected robbers jumped on a parked unregistered motorbike and sped off.
The police quickly chased them with several verbal attempts [warning] for them to stop but to no avail.
However, upon sensing danger, one of the suspects removed his pistol in an attempt to shoot the police officers pursuing them but was overpowered in the process.
The ring leader, Salifu Mohammed, was arrested and sent to Regional Hospital at Bolgatanga for treatment under police Armed Guard.
His accomplice, who managed to escape during the time the police were pursing them is currently on the run.
According to the police, efforts are underway to get his accomplice arrested, after which both of them will be charged with attempted robbery and possession of firm arms without authority.
A locally manufactured pistol loaded with one live AA cartridge and another AA cartridge in the right pocket of the suspect’s trouser were retrieved from the suspect at the time of his arrest.
