Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Member of Parliament for Juaboso Constituency in the Western North Region, has sued Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Ken City Media which belongs to Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, for defamation.
This comes after Abronye had alleged on Oman FM, a member of the Ken City Media, that Mr Akandoh demanded money from the Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu who was being investigated by a parliamentary committee over the botched Sputnik V vaccine contract.
According to Abronye, Akandoh was demanding from Agyeman-Manu moneys that belonged to the state in relation to the Sputnik V deal in order to stop criticizing the Health Minister with regards to the deal.
According to the suit, “the 3rd Defendant as the host of the programme and as expected of any professional journalist failed and or neglected to ask the 1st Defendant to retract the said defamatory statement or desist from making such defamatory statements as he provided no evidence to support his claims.”
“The Plaintiff avers that the 2nd Defendant by publishing the said defamatory statement by the 1st Defendant did so with the sole purpose of aiding and or facilitating the 1st Defendant to dent the reputation of the Plaintiff without any justification and to impute crime to the Plaintiff since under the laws of Ghana, bribery and corruption is criminalized,” the suit further states.
The suit also demands a declaration that the Plaintiff’s reputation has been injured by reason of the false, malicious, unjustifiable and reckless defamatory statement uttered by the 1st Defendant and further published by Oman 107.1 FM, promoted and sponsored by the 2nd Defendant.
The 11-page defamation suit is demanding GHS2million damages.
