The Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency Lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu has marked one hundred (100) days in office with an event where he accounted to his constituents whiles launching his Educational Fund and Teachers Award Scheme.
The legislator opined that, marking of 100 days in office is a bench mark to critically measure what holds in the future in every administration, adding that in the 4th Republic, many Ghanaian presidents have been subjected to similar reviews. He stated that it gives considerable time for clear cut policy directions and for policies to have full impact on the people.
The parliamentarian noted that he was sworn into office a little over three months ago and marked his hundred (100) days in office on 17/04/2021. He mentioned that he is committed to making Madina great by helping to develop his Constituency in all possible ways by transforming his campaign promises into action. To achieve this, he transcribed his campaign promises into a working document which was put together by a Committee made up of members of his team led by Timothy King, a lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra . This was to enable him track actual deliverables as against targets.
He described his tenure so far as sucessful given the promising policies which he has started and lined up for his Constituency. The following were outlined as his achievements so far within his hundred days in office :
Madina Job Centre
He stated “The Madina Job Centre has taken flight ‘’ revealing that the Projects is a strategy aimed at reducing unemployment and providing job opportunities to the constituents. He further revealed that the project has provided over five hundred jobs to the constituents by linking applicants to jobs based on their qualifications. Under the same project is the Vocational Apprenticeship module focusing on providing employable skills to interested constituents which currently has fifty constituents undergoing training in fashion design and provided with sewing machines each to aid their training. The third module under the Madina Job Centre is Entrepreneurship which has also provided opportunities both in Agriculture and Information Technology (IT). He added that in partnership with ZIMBA Media the Centre has trained fifty students in graphic designing and motion graphics. One hundred women were also trained in Mushroom farming with Nine Hundred awaiting training. Ten students are currently undergoing electronic training.
He mentioned that very soon he will roll out the youth in poultry and several other innovative ways to fight poverty in Madina .
He intimated that under Health, he embarked on a medical outreach which according to him saw over Two Thousand constituents receive free medical care. He added that the project is not limited to only medical care but include sanitation which seeks to improve the sanitary conditions and ensure general improvement of health facilities within the Constituency.
Hon. Sosu recounted that in his recent tour with the Municipal Director of Works and Municipal Engineer, he observed that doctors are still treating patients in containers whiles huge structures which began in the year 2013 and almost near completion were left unattended to.
He further intimated that, he is committed to ensure, advocate, partner various authorities and stakeholders to open Madina Kekele Polyclinic to benefit all in Madina while exploring and working with the Municipal Health Director and the University of Ghana to convert Damfa Health Centre into a full-fledged Polyclinic. He further revealed that he has proposed to set up Oyarefa Health Centre and operationalize CHPS Compounds at Otinibi and Teiman. He promised to work with the Municipal Assembly and the Ghana Health Service to push for a District Hospital in Damfa.
The MP stated that he believes sports can provide a wide range of opportunities for the youth in Madina. That is why he has started the Youth and Sports Development project to cater for that aspect and he hopes to renovate all major pitches in the constituency to improve sporting activities. He mentioned that, he will engage all stake holders to improve various sporting infrastructure to help make sports a major economic activity in the constituency. He revealed that a committee has been constituted and tasked to put together a comprehensive sports plan and a comprehensive sports tournament to help unearth all sport talents within the Constituency.
His Islam project which was launched recently, is also another innovation the MP said is intended to reach out to people of the Islamic faith in the constituency. He said that since a large number of children attend Makarantas, with a peculiar situation of mass school drop out within the Zongo, that requires attention and leadership. The Islam Project shall engage in Ramadan Outreaches, Hajj promotion, among others. The Islam Project under his office has the National Chief Imam as its life patron and a Board of Trustees chaired by the Chief Imam of Madina, and other eminent Islamic scholars with considerable influence that can shape the Islam community and guidethem to meet their specific needs. He further added that the project is a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) and will partner with other Islamic NGOs and countries to improve Mosques, support Hajj, provide social amenities, conduct educational Outreaches within Zongo and provide social amenities such as boreholes and libraries.
The MP who is also the Deputy Ranking Member on the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament stated that education is his priority and having launched the Educational Project, it will respond to all the educational needs within the Constituency since children in Madina deserve good education. This has inspired him to change all black boards to white marker boards in all schools within the Constituency. The Education Project will also provide scholarships for brilliant but needy students. The Education Project shall through the Teacher Award Scheme reward hardworking and deserving teachers. The project will also implement the MP’s Excellence Award in law for the best graduating student from the UPSA law faculty to encourage the study of law in the constituency.
He asserted that, even though it is not the core duty of an MP to construct roads and physical infrastructure, he has a duty to demand accountability from the authorities responsible for such, having toured all physical projects within the Municipality, he observed several abandoned school and health projects which he is working with Stakeholders to follow up on the requisite funding agencies to advocate for the completion of the projects. He further stated that, the only government flagship project under the One Constituency One million dollars in his Constituency is a small toilet facility at Otinibi.
Having inspected road networks in Madina, the MP has promised to demand accountability and performance from persons paid with taxpayers money to serve and provide relevant service to the people.
He assured of Quality Parliamentary Representation policy by giving the constituency a loud voice in Parliament, project infrastructure deficit and lobby for more development.
The MP launched the Teachers Award Scheme and Scholarship Scheme of the Education Project.
Dr. Koryoe Anim Wright on behalf of the Vice Chancellor inducted a seven member Board of Trustees, a Six member Resource Mobilization Committee, a Five member Scholarship Award Committee and a Three Member Fund Managers for the Educational Project.
The Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies Accra applauded the MP for such projects stating that education is a drive to growth in every country. He made mention of how some Tertiary Students in UPSA drop out and end up on the street based on lack of finances to pay thier fees. He expressed excitement about the creation of the Educational project which will take education to the next level especially with the scholarship for Tertiary students by supporting such students. The fund by the MP is structured in a way that, all MPs will have to continue regardless of their party this means the MP has his Constituency at heart, students after completion will also be linked to jobs by the Madina Job Centre which makes it a perfect compliment. He urged all MPs to emulate same to help grow the country. He charged that the selection Committee of the scholarship fund to select students dispationately without fear or favour or based on party lines.
The chief of Pantang Nii Otubua III lauded the MP for such a wonderful initiative to support students who are well inclined in academics but do not have the means to access education due to financial difficulties. He remaked that this initiative will aid everyone regardless of their political affiliation (NPP &NDC) and urged ,everyone to embrace the initiative and support it in every little way by contributing to the fund. The chief pleaded with everyone who has acquired a major position to support the needy to ensure that they have a bright future. He encouraged people to desist from tribal politics regardless of their tribal affiliation because God created us in is own image.
