Over the weekend, the counting of ballot papers at the University of Ghana (Legon) Students Representative Council election degenerated into a bloodbath, with some students needing medical attention.
This is the result of a misunderstanding between the students about alleged ballot-counting cheating.
Angry supporters, who felt cheated, went on a rampage on campus, destroying property and automobiles by throwing stones at the windows.
Some of the students were hurt as a result of the melee, including one who was hit in the head by a stone thrown by an unknown person.
He was apprehended in a serious state, drenched in blood and oozing profusely.
The Electoral Commission of the University has declared Prince Asumadu and Wisdom Ndukwe as President and Vice President elect, respectively.
The two received 7,647 votes, accounting for 51.6 percent of all votes cast.
Samuel Amos Ofosu and his running mate, Alfred Acquah, received 7,156 votes, accounting for 48.3 percent of the vote.
This year’s SRC presidential race was forced into a run-off as none of the four competing teams got the required 50% plus one vote (50 percent +1).
