The only independent Member of Parliament in the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic, Andrews Asiamah expresses his gratefulness to God for the abundance of blessings in his life.

Prior to the 2020 Ghanaian general election, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) surprisingly expelled one of their MPs from parliament — the expelled NPP MP was Hon. Andrews Asiamah Amoako.

After he was expelled, he filed nomination for the parliamentary election to constest as an independent candidate. In the campaign period, the Leader and Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has urged the people of Fomena not to vote for the expelled NPP MP who picked nominations as an independent candidate in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

He asked the electorates to vote for the new NPP Parliamentary candidate and not the independent candidate who was once an NPP MP. The President went ahead to express his unreadiness to work with any independent MP.

On the day of elections, the electorates massively endorsed the independent candidate, Hon. Andrews Amoako Asiamah. The balance of power in Parliament after the election does not look so favourable for the ruling NPP — the NPP won 137 seats in Parliament and so did the NDC.

The only seat left was that of the independent candidate. With this balance, the NPP needs the independent Fomena MP, the person they have expelled some months ago on their side in order to form majority in Parliament.

The night of January 6 through to the dawn of January 7 saw the election of the Speaker of Parliament. After all the drama from the night till dawn, Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin was elected as the Speaker, Hon. Joseph Osei-Owsusu, the NPP MP for Bekwai was elected as First Deputy Speaker, and Hon. Andrews Amoako Asiamah was shockingly nominated by the NDC, and endorsed as the Second Deputy Speaker.

Reacting to his new appointment, the independent Fomena MP took to his Facebook page to express his joy.

God never dissapoints indeed. Who am I that the Lord is so mindful of me?My people in Fomena Constituency, God bless you so much. May this new appointment bring us all, hope and development and may the God of light, who is infinite in mercy and grace grant us all wisdom and courage to work together to serve our motherland, Ghana, and Fomena Constituency. God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong.Akpɛna Mawu, Aseda nka Nyame, Thank you Lord, Numo Oyiwaladɔŋ, Allah Mungoode!” he wrote.
