Reports available to indicates that five(5) alleged armed robbers have been lynched by residents of Nyinawusu in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

Investigations by the Ghana Police Service has however revealed that the deceased persons and one other were illegal miners from Akorabuokrom in the Atwima Mponua district who went to the area to engage in mining activities.

Due to accusations by some residents that they were behind armed robbery operations that occurred in the area a few days ago, they were invited to the Nyinawusu Chief’s palace on Thursday evening after their mining activities, where they were quizzed on their activities in the area.

During the interrogation, residents of the area surrounded the Chief’s palace and threatened to lynch the accused persons causing the Chief to call on the Ghana Police Service to intervene, but the residents managed to prevent the police from having access to the accused persons.

The police called for backup, but by the time they came, the residents had slain four of the suspects, one of whom was critically injured but subsequently died in the hospital.

However, one of the accused persons managed to escape.

According to the Chief of Akorabuokrom, Nana Kwaku Frimpong, “the government has to do something to catch those who did that criminal offence. There is no way around it. Lynching is a criminal offence. The suspects didn’t do anything, and they killed them.”
