The Member of Parliament for Hohoe Constituency in the Volta Region, Hon. John Peter Amewu has explained how he managed to make history by snatching the Hohoe Parliamentary seat from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, he didn’t win because of money but largely because the elephant party is loved by people in the Hohoe constituency.

He stated that Hohoe was a strong United Party (UP) area.

The UP was the main opposition party in the First Republic of Ghana. It was the only opposition party throughout its existence from 1957 until 1964 when Ghana became a one party state under Kwame Nkrumah.

Dr. K. A Busia’s Progress Party in the Second Republic, Victor Owusu’s Popular Front Party of the Third Republic, and the Fourth Republican New Patriotic Party (NPP) all claimed their roots from the “UGCC – UP tradition”

According to Amewu most of their grandfathers were strong supporters of UP so it shouldn’t come as a surprise when the people of Hohoe express love to the NPP.

He revealed that it took Jerry John Rawlings’ dynamism to wash away the UP tradition that was in Hohoe. He added thankfully, the love for the NPP is gradually coming back.

He also indicated that his victory was possible because he was once a District Chief Executive of Hohoe an has also contested for the Parliamentary Seat during President Kuffour’s era.

He noted that he is very well aware of the political terrain of the area because the 2020 election was not his first time of contesting to be the MP for Hohoe.

He also noted that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo played a very critical role in terms of supporting him to carry out developmental projects in the Hohoe constituency.

He believes that such developmental projects are part of the reasons why the people of Hohoe entrusted him with their votes.

He stressed that his own dynamism also played a key role in winning the seat for the NPP.
