According to officials, at least 25 children aged five to six died after their straw-hut classrooms caught fire in southern Niger.

Reports also indicated that several others were injured during the blaze, which broke out on Monday morning while the children were in class at the country’s Maradi area.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

According to the mayor of Maradi city, Chaibou Aboubacar, Monday’s blaze destroyed three such classrooms.

While fires of this nature are not uncommon in Niger, it is unusual for one to result in so many deaths.
