The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has sent a message to Ghanaians about the recent rejection of the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy by Parliament.

His message comes after the Majority Leader and his Caucus made several claims that last Friday’s rejection of the 2022 Budget was not Constitutional.

Responding to such claims from the Majority Caucus, the Speaker in a Facebook post urged Ghanaians to “disregard the survival antics by the ever loquacious Leader of the Majority Group in today’s hung Parliament.”

According to him, 138 Members of Parliament were Present on the floor when the House was voting on the approval or otherwise of the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy.

“Please let it be known that there were more than 137 MPs on the Floor when I put the question for the approval or rejection of the Economic Policy and Financial Statement of the government for the 2022 financial year often referred to as the Budget for 2022,” he stated.

According him, “after the rejection of the request by the Minister of Finance to be given more time to consult the expanded leadership of Parliament, one member of the Majority Caucus came to sit on the last row of the seats on the Majority side by the side-door facing the Speaker’s lobby.

He noted that the presence of that additional Member of Parliament took the number of attendants at that moment to 138.

He further revealed that when he put up the question to the Plenary, the Hon. Gentleman who was on the last row of the seats on the Majority side by the side-door facing the Speaker’s lobby remained silent.

He further stressed that the 2022 budget was lawfully rejected.
